A beautiful park full of trees just starting to turn into their autumn colours. Also a small cave of lava and lava tubes. Our friends told us that this is what it is like all around Mt Fuji.

Friday 24 Oct 2014 – Our friends Yuko san & Ura san picked us up from Odawara station and took us to the Hakone Open Air Museum. Wonderful sculptures and lots of Picasso’s. After to Lake Yamanakako for the views of Mt Fuji.

Long day but fabulous. Sun Princess anchored off Ishigaki so tender to shore then ferry boat to Iriomote Island. Next a jungle cruise up the Urauchi River past mangroves. Next the really fun part, bus to Mihara and then Water Buffalo cart across to Yubijima Island

Ryukyu Village & Shikinaen Gardens Ryukyu Village This lovely gentle water buffalo’s job was to turn the presses for sugar cane Shinkinaen Gardens Unfortunately we couldn’t get too many photos of this beautiful garden because the heavens opened. No umbrella, no shelter. We all got drenched. Bridge – Shinkinaen Gardens Loved Okinawa, and in particular the music and culture. They see themselves as very separate from Japan. Went to Hakone & Gora yesterday. You get off the Shinkensen at Odawarra then take the local train to Hakone, then the switchback up to Gora. Next the cable car up to the ropeway. The day was very cloudy and the top of Mt. Fuji was covered with cloud. Very cold, snow and very busy. This couple were not exactly dressed for a cold trip on the ropeway to Lake Ashinoko. Loved her shoes

Some of the thousands of Tori Gates that this temple is famous for. Individuals and companies have donated these over many years. Cost depends on the size of the gate. The Tori gates from above. The other thing this temple is famous for are the many fox statues dotted around the five shrines on Mt Inari. The fox is considered to be a messenger between man and the spirit world.

Today Yaeko took me to the Horin Ji (temple) in Arashiyama. Parents take their children here in their 13th year to gain wisdom. They must never look back as they leave the temple. Yaeko herself came here when she was 13
