Choi Hee-Jin studio & Gilsangsa Temple

May 29, 2018 by mijville

Day 2 in Seoul started with a visit to Jinny’s  workshop. See- Jin Choi  is a very talented ceramicist and will be exhibiting her work in Italy in September. Jinny let me play with some clay. It was good to get my hands into clay again although my efforts were somewhat amateurish. Next was a trip to Gilsangsa Temple. The temple is quite young only becoming a temple in 1997. It was once a fancy restaurant but was donated by […]

Tokyo SkyTree

May 23, 2018 by mijville

Tokyo Skytree is 634 metres high with an observation deck at 350 metres. Construction began in 2008 and finished 2012. There were a few problems with ice falling from the tower and damaging some buildings. This has now been fixed. View from the observation deck gives spectacular views of Tokyo and on a clear day one can see Mt Fuji. If you are brave enough you can stand on a glass floor with views straight down

Wagashi Making

May 13, 2018 by mijville

My friend Yaeko took me to the Yoshihiro Kyoto Style shop for a class in Wagashi making. Wagashi is a sweet made using mochi and anko (bean paste). Wagashi is often eaten before having  matcha tea. Yaeko and her creations. We laughed so much at our attempts at making these gorgeous sweets. I think we both did very well. It wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. Our Sensei showing how it is done.

January 20, 2018 by mijville

My good friend Yeako took me to a New Years Concert presented by Kyoto Women’s University on the shores of the beautiful Lake Biwa. The programme started with two sopranos, a tenor and a children’s choir. They sang  without any backing music and it was all very beautiful. I think they had something to do with  the Otani Tu Buddhist University, Next music with a brass orchestra composed by Hiroshi Ohguri. Interval was followed by songs from the Sound of […]

Goshuin Japan

February 20, 2017 by mijville

I really enjoy going to the Shrines & Temples here in Japan . What I didn’t know about was Goshuin. These are stamps –  shuin that you can get at most Shrines & Temples in Japan. Temple or shrine attendants will stamp your book and then hand write with ink & brush the name  of the shrine or temple and the date. You must have a special book- goshuin chou for the shuin. Don’t try and get a stamp in […]
