Sagano Scenic Railway – Kyoto

June 22, 2016 by mijville

Sagano Scenic Railway also known as the Romantic Train runs along the Hozugawa River from Arashiyama to Kameoka. From this lovely old train with open carriages and wooden bench seats you can see the most wonderful scenery. You can purchase a return ticket or come back on the Hozugawa River Run. The day we did the trip the River was closed due to heavy rain. I have done the River Run and it was heaps of fun.

Mishima

June 16, 2016 by mijville

Trip to Mishima started on the Shinkansen from Tokyo to Mishima. Shirley’s first trip on the Shinkansen The Mishima Skywalk is one of the best places to view Mt Fuji…that is if it’s not a rainy overcast day. Unfortunately the day we were there it was a rainy overcast day with not even a hint of the mountain. As we walked over the bridge, Japanese people kept apologising that we couldn’t see Fuji. So typical of the Japanese Still an […]

Toi to Shizuoka

February 29, 2016 by mijville

After a blissful early morning soak in one of the three private onsens at the Ryokan Yuko san and I went for a walk along the waterfront and came across a man harvesting salt from the bay. Loved the use of an old twin washer/ drier to spin off the excess water. We both came away with a fresh bag of Izu Peninsular salt that will last us for at least a year. Sea water is pumped into a large […]

Sakura-jima Kagoshima

February 13, 2016 by mijville

Sakura-jima is one of the worlds most active volcanos. Located in Kagoshima Bay 8km west of Kagoshima City, population of half a million people. Sakura-jima has been erupting constantly since the 8th century While we were there it erupted frequently with steam of plumes of ash. Quite spectacular. We were to take the train to Kagoshima station to catch the ferry to the Island but missed our stop and ended up at Ryugamizu Station – in the middle of nowhere. […]

Tokyo Bay and the Aqua Line (Tokyo Bay Tunnel)

January 29, 2016 by mijville

Ura san told us we were going back to Tokyo via the Tokyo Bay Tunnel. He explained that we were going over a bridge into the middle of Tokyo Bay and then would go through a tunnel to the other side. We went over the bridge. but then he pulled into a car park. We were a bit confused until we went to the Tokyo Bay Oasis. A huge tourist complex just before you enter the tunnel. Food, Souvenirs, an […]
