Chiba – Cape Inubosaki

January 28, 2016 by mijville

Ura san & Yuko san picked us in their car and took us on a two day trip around the coastline of Chiba. First stop was the Yamasa Choshi soy sauce factory. Very interesting video on how soy sauce is made. Soy sauce ice cream is surprisingly nice. Next stop was Cape Inubosaki Lighthouse built in 1874. Yuko and I climbed the 99 steps to the top of the lighthouse.Freezing up there but amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. Fresh seafood […]

21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art- Kanazawa

January 26, 2016 by mijville

An excellent art Gallery. I’ve been to this gallery 3 times now and the exhibitions have always been so interesting and enjoyable. Here are a few pics of some of the exhibits. Have a look at their website for more information. https://www.kanazawa21.jp/exhibition_event_en.php I was mesmerised by “Ghost in the Cell” and there was a huge exhibition of  Inoue Yuichi, a Japanese calligraphy artist plus so much more. Below is the work of Aono Fumiaki who transform objects washed up on […]

Kanazawa Castle

January 26, 2016 by mijville

Thunderbird Express – Kyoto to Kanazawa. very comfortable 2 1/2 hours. Rainy day at Kanazawa Castle Interesting display of how these castles were built showing the wood joinery, walls and roof. Castle was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1881 so most of the castle has been rebuilt.

Ebisu Jinja Shrine – Kyoto

January 10, 2016 by mijville

My friend Yaeko took me to the Ebisu Jinja Shrine for the Tokaebisu Festival held on the 10th of January each year. Merchants and business people go to pray for good business and for the well being and safety of family. I don’t have any good pictures of the shrine itself as it was packed with people who were praying and buying Kitcho – kodakara (lucky ornaments) attached to  fuku-zasa (bamboo sprigs.) The lady dressed as a Geisha is an […]

Busan- South Korea – Beomeosa Temple

August 8, 2015 by mijville

Beomeosa Temple. Take a look at  the spectacular Gwangan Bridge. It was difficult to photograph the bridge from the bus but I hope it gives you some idea of what it is like. Beomeosa Temple is a working temple and while we were there many of the smaller temples were holding services. The temple on the slopes of Mt. Geumjeongsan was so colourful and beautifully decorated I took heaps of photos so you are just getting a few.

Aomori & Lake Towado

August 6, 2015 by mijville

Bus trip to Lake Towado which is a very deep double caldera lake  of an active volcano that last erupted in 915AD . Our guide told us there is only one other double caldera lake in the world and that is in the USA Here are some pretty pictures from our cruise around the lake. Shame about the lack of blue skies in most of my photos. Most of the trip was overcast. Went on the ropeway that carries up […]

The Seikan Railway Tunnel was opened in 1988  connecting Honshu & Hokkaido. The tunnel runs  240 metres below the Tsugau Straight and 100 metres below the seabed and is 53.85 km long. We went through the tunnel  a few years ago.     Next stop was the Sumo Origins Museum where some of the boys got to try on the Mawashi (sumo belt) Sumo ring (dohya) at the Sumo Shrine As a woman this  is one of a few dohya […]

Korsakov – Russia

August 4, 2015 by mijville

Next port – Korsakov Russia. A 7am start on a “rustic bus”   Next stop was the “Ice Palace” for a pit stop and a bit of souvenir shopping A tour in Russia would not be complete without a trip to a military memorial – Victory Square and Square of Glory complete with massive statues and tanks. I liked the love locks on the fences Next the Sakhalin Regional Museum. Korsakov was ruled by Japan at one time so this […]
